Three student members sworn in to Seattle School District No. 1 board

The oath, administered publicly, required each student to pledge support for the constitutions and laws of the United States and the state of Washington and to “to the best of my judgment, skill, and ability, truly, faithfully, diligently, and impartially perform the duties of student member of the Seattle Public Schools board of directors, as such duties are prescribed by law and policy.”
Student board member Josephine Mangelsen said she is “really looking forward to be representing the students of the Seattle Public Schools District this upcoming year,” and that she is excited to work “with all the different directors and the other student members.” Student board member Isabel Masudi said she was “also really excited to be a student representative on the board this year and to work with all the other student representatives [and] board members and to serve the diverse voices of this students of the public schools.”
Sabi Yoon, a senior at Ballard High School and a returning student board member, said she was “truly honored to serve as a student board member this year representing my peers and the entire SPS student body.” Yoon noted that last year was the third cohort of student board members and described the program as still developing; she thanked mentors including “Julia” and said small acts like listening and creating safe spaces can make a difference.
President Topp invited family and friends for photos after each oath and closed the ceremony with a brief reception including cake. The board noted the newly sworn student members may remain for the board’s regular meeting; the students’ first official regular-meeting participation was described as occurring next month.
The ceremony included Superintendent Fred Podesta and board directors Vice President Briggs, Director Clark, Director Hersey, Director Rankin and Director Sarju in attendance. No formal votes or motions were recorded in the transcript of the ceremony; the event consisted of oath administration, brief remarks by the student members and informal acknowledgment by board leadership.
The meeting was adjourned after the group photo and reception plans were announced.
