Deputy Superintendent Caffeller presented the school board with detailed furniture and finish selections for the new Jennie Dean Elementary School, describing classroom layouts, storage plans and the palette that will be used throughout the building.
Caffeller said designers and school administrators prioritized storage, flexible learning spaces and durable finishes. Preschool classrooms will include play kitchens, two carpets (dramatic-play and morning-meeting mats) and flexible seating; typical K–4 classrooms will include student desks sized by grade level, ample storage cabinets finished in natural maple, and a consistent color palette pulled through adult and student furniture. The media center will be sized for about 10,000 volumes and will use flexible “tangram” lounge seating to support small-group work.
Board members asked about transfer of stools and other lessoned items from Baldwin Elementary; Caffeller said several Baldwin stools will be moved to Hayden based on teacher requests and that stools at Jennie Dean will be used only around reading tables, not as general desk seating. On supply-chain concerns, Caffeller said the architect and vendors had checked delivery timelines and “were not concerned” about furniture delivery; staff plans to go out to bid for the furniture package no later than October, with a potential to move the schedule earlier if possible.
Board members also asked whether the selections tie to the district’s strategic plan; Caffeller said selections align with the division’s goals for an “inclusive, collaborative learning environment” and with the division’s vision for an inviting, functional school that supports instruction.
The presentation included specific selections for administration, clinic, music and art rooms, the cafeteria (rectangular-table seating chosen over round), IT workroom, broadcast room and other specialty spaces. Staff said samples of soft-seating fabrics and finish tri-folds will remain on site for review.
Next steps: staff will finalize RFP language and issue the furniture bid package in the coming weeks, and board members will review any procurement documents during the work-session process.
