Referendum Phase 2 update: Karl Traeger addition, playground changes and Veil Phillips track running behind schedule

District staff told the Board of Education on Aug. 13 that Phase 2 referendum projects are advancing but that some elements will disrupt school-site hardscape during construction and that the Veil (Bell) Phillips Track and Field project is running behind the original schedule.
Mister Neehan provided Phase 2 updates and shared a rendering of the proposed Karl Traeger addition. He said the design aims to blend the new wing with the existing building. The playground will remain in roughly the same footprint but some hardscape areas will be disrupted during construction; staff are working with school leaders to identify alternate hardscape space for students during the school year.
A community meeting to review traffic-flow and parking plans is scheduled for Aug. 19 at 5:30 p.m. in the Karl Traeger cafetorium. Neehan said feedback from the neighborhood meeting will inform the city—s planning review and a request for common-council approval.
Facilities staff provided an update on the Veil (Bell) Phillips Track and Field. Mr. Fox said the project experienced early delays due to poor fill material and elevation issues but that contractors have corrected the fill, graded the site and placed base gravel for the track. "We're targeting Aug. 30" to complete the basketball-court asphalt, hoops and fencing so it will be accessible for students, Fox said. He estimated the full project would likely be complete in September but said the turf and seeding timeline makes fall access to the track uncertain; staff are targeting spring for student use and do not anticipate opening the track to community access this fall because of restoration work, watering and contractors still on site.
Board members asked about a dedication for the site; staff said a dedication is planned and details will be shared when finalized.
