The Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Board of Education received a first reading Oct. 23 on a package of policy updates that largely mirror recent template changes from the district s policy vendor and new state statutes.
District administrators said several separate policies on harassment and discrimination in the 1000-, 3000- and 4000-series would be combined into unified entries: 1422/1422.02/1662 will be consolidated into one 1422 policy for students; 3122/3122.02/3362 will be combined for professional staff; and 4122/4122.02/4362 will be combined for support staff. The superintendent said the substance of local protections largely remains but the templates were updated to align with the vendor and state guidance.
Administrators also highlighted a change reflecting state law that inserts the term "grooming" into student-supervision and welfare policy (policy 1613). The superintendent explained that the term was added because it appears in recently enacted state law and the district is updating policy language to match the statute.
Another item noted was a move to expand the district s personal-communication-device rule: K 8 students will continue to have limitations; high-school cell-phone restrictions will be phased in during the second semester. The district said implementation timing for 9 12 will be the second semester of the school year.
Administrators cautioned that several policies appear to be rescinded in the packet but were in fact consolidated into updated templates; the board did not vote on the packet at the Oct. 23 meeting and will consider final action at a subsequent meeting.
Ending: The policy revisions remain at first-reading status; board members and staff will review the combined language and return for a future vote.
