Chief Mike Maza of the Navasota Police Department presented a TxDOT grant opportunity to fund overtime for targeted traffic enforcement in high‑crash zones.
"It's an 80/20 grant," Chief Maza said, and staff described how TxDOT uses crash record data to identify enforcement zones. Chief Maza said the program would reimburse overtime for officers who work enforcement shifts off duty in designated zones, such as Highway 6, Washington, LaSalle and other high‑crash corridors. He told the council TxDOT had calculated the award at $11,421.42 and that the city’s 20% share would be $2,358.97.
Chief Maza said the program is restricted to off‑duty hours so it does not pull officers from regular shifts; the department would log STEP hours and citations and submit them for reimbursement. He also said the city budgeted its 20% share in overtime funds and that the program includes quarterly reporting and public‑awareness components.
A motion to approve participation in the TxDOT STEP grant passed unanimously. Council members who seconded and supported the motion noted the program’s potential to increase visible enforcement in known crash corridors without diverting on‑duty officers from calls for service.
