The Madison City Commission on Aug. 12 approved Change Order No. 1 for the Madison Hanover Connector Trail project to add Ready Rock retaining wall caps and related work.
City staff said the engineer recommended the caps and that adding them is "aesthetically a much more pleasing wall." A staff member said the project had been under budget by about $96,000 and that the base bid included a $100,000 contingency, and asked the commission to add the rock wall caps from available contingency. "We were under budget, by 96000 dollars plus I have a $100,000 contingency in the base bid," the staff member said.
Packet materials and discussion included multiple line-item figures. Staff cited a total change order figure of $67,329.75 and later explained how reductions and additions resulted in a net increase and a new contract amount of $2,324,801.75. Commissioners asked for clarification of the breakdown; staff acknowledged the presentation was confusing but walked through the figures before the motion to approve.
A motion was made and seconded to approve Change Order No. 1; the commission voted in favor.
Staff said the consultant-recommended caps would be phased into construction to try to limit the park closure during work and that a groundbreaking event was scheduled this week.
