Gadsden City Council approves demolition, utility relocations and drainage repairs; names three to Arts Council

Gadsden City Council on Aug. 5 adopted a series of engineering and administrative resolutions including a $222,300 demolition contract for the future Gadsden Athletic Center, reimbursable utility relocation agreements tied to a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) project on Walnut Street, and a $110,900 drainage repair agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). The council also adopted a resolution appointing three nonvoting members to the Gadsden Arts Council.

The engineering presenter summarized each action before the council. The council approved awarding bid number 3607 for demolition of existing structures that will become the Gadsden Athletic Center, naming Engel Demolition and Salvage as contractor for $222,300. The council authorized reimbursable agreements with the Gas and Water Works and Sewer Board for relocation of a valve box and manhole frame and cover totaling $25,800, and with Spire Energy for relocation of a gas valve box totaling $750; both agreements were described as part of the MPO project from Walnut and Fifth to Walnut and Eighth. The council also authorized a special agreement with ALDOT for drainage repairs on George Wallace Drive for $110,900.
