Commissioners debate nominating process after single committee nomination for mayor pro tem

Members of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners spent part of the Sept. 2 informal meeting discussing the nominating committee's recent slate and the process for selecting the legislative body's chairperson pro tem.

Commissioner Woodruff read the nominating committee's recommendations, including a nomination of Commissioner Joe Smith as chairperson pro tem for a one-year term to expire September 2026. Several commissioners sought clarification about whether additional nominees could be offered at the formal meeting.

County leaders explained the nominating committee's role: it produces one nomination, which appears on the floor; other nominations may be made from the floor at the formal session, and a vote is required if multiple nominees are presented. Commissioner Bail asked about the process for amending a nomination; the county attorney's explanation — provided in the meeting record — clarified that a different nominee may be proposed from the floor at formal session and that the election procedure would then be followed.

Commissioner Rasheeda Leverett said the committee had discussed multiple names and that presenting only one nominee gives an impression of limited opportunity and may signal favoritism. Leverett said she plans to seek the mayor pro tem nomination at the next formal meeting.

Commissioner Bridal noted that a resolution passed last year asked interested commissioners to submit a form to the nominating committee to indicate interest in committee or position assignments.
