Lakeville applies for $150,000 state grant to study pond complex hydrology
Summary
Town staff submitted a Community Compact grant seeking $150,000 to fund an engineering hydrology study of the pond complex and to position the town as a conduit to access roughly $4.75 million authorized by a 2014 House bill for mitigation work.

Town officials told selectmen they have submitted a $150,000 Community Compact grant request to fund a preliminary hydrology study and engineering work for the town’s pond complex, with the stated goal of positioning Lakeville (and possibly a regional grouping) to access funds authorized by a 2014 House bill (quoted in the meeting as $4,750,000).
The presenter said the grant application grew from a recent meeting in which state and regional stakeholders discussed mitigation needs. The presenter said they spoke with a state senator identified in the meeting transcript as Senator Rodricks, who advised how the town might access the authorized funds and suggested the grant emphasize mitigation measures that align with state capital spending priorities, including references to climate-related impacts. The speaker submitted the nine-page grant the day before the selectmen meeting.
Selectmen said the project has two goals: (1) immediate emergency-response improvements and (2) a longer-term engineering and mitigation strategy for the pond system and its outlets. The presenter said an intermediary governmental entity will likely be needed to administer and disburse the authorized funds at the state level, and that historically nobody had stepped forward to play that convening/intermediary role, which is why the money remained unused.
Why this matters: recurring flooding and hydrology concerns affect properties in and around the pond complex. A targeted engineering study is the typical first step to justify larger mitigation grants and to create a multi‑year strategy.
What’s next: the town will await state review of the submitted Community Compact grant; the presenter said the submission includes a timeline and that staff will follow up with state contacts and with regional partners.
