Abington Heights board hears construction update, approves routine personnel, contracts and disposals

The Abington Heights School District Board of Directors approved several routine measures and heard a construction update from Superintendent Dr. Schafer during a regularly scheduled meeting.

Dr. Schafer told the board the district remains on track with multiple building projects, including moving the middle‑school drop‑off from the front to the rear, expanding the east‑side parking lot and paving the East Access Road. "Safety is at the forefront," he said, adding the district will run bus and van dry runs to confirm turning space and traffic patterns before school starts.

The work at the high school includes a completed multipurpose field and visitor bleachers; the superintendent said the home‑side bleachers should be finished in about 10 to 12 days. The district is coordinating with South Abington Township on paving and sidewalk work on Noble Road, which he said is progressing more slowly than district parking work. Dr. Schafer told the board contractors will use staggered start times and constrained delivery windows to limit disruption.

Following the report, the board voted unanimously on a set of consent and action items. The motions approved included adoption of the meeting agenda, approval of minutes from July 16 and Aug. 6, acceptance of the personnel report, ratification of the August volunteer list, approval of an agreement with New Story to provide educational services for student 43A, disposal of two nonfunctional kilns at the middle school, and approval of a part‑time athletic department support job description. The meeting concluded after a motion to adjourn passed unanimously.

Board Chair Acker and other members did not request additional studies or changes to the items presented. The superintendent said the district will continue to provide updates to families as construction progresses, including a video and guidance on drop‑off procedures once paving is complete.
