At the Sept. 3 Whitestown Fire Board meeting, the fire chief delivered the department’s monthly report for August, covering public outreach events, personnel changes, training, inspections and EMS operations.
The chief said the department attended several community events in August including a Main Street Parks “Touch‑A‑Truck” and a Culver’s Heroes Night. He announced the promotion of former division chief of training Sam Schell to deputy chief of operations and said recruiting continues to fill the now‑vacant division chief of training role. The chief also noted that firefighter Kyle Affelter had passed EMT class and began his first shift, bringing the department to the seventh staffed position the department had been targeting.
Training and inspections: The chief reported 1,311 hours of fire training for August; notable training included rope‑rescue drills conducted across all three shifts and use of the town’s water tower to simulate a stranded victim. Prevention and inspections totaled 134 items: 86 annual inspections, 13 other inspections and 35 alarm and sprinkler system tests.
EMS and billing: The chief said the monthly EMS report showed roughly 245 hours of EMS training, 93 patient contacts and 90 transports for the month. The packet listed 37 basic life support and 43 advanced life support contacts (other ALS categories in the packet were not fully specified in meeting discussion). August month‑to‑date billing revenue was $42,182.76 and year‑to‑date billing revenue stood at $325,733, represented in the packet as a 12.47% increase over the same point last year. The packet also included run statistics: 189 runs for August and a year‑to‑date total of 1,373 (a net decrease of 13 runs, or about 1%, from the prior year).
Apparatus status: The department’s 2019 Rosenbauer ladder truck (identified in packet as Ladder 272) remained out of service for antifreeze and exhaust issues; the chief said the manufacturer is currently covering the work under warranty.
The chief concluded the report by noting EMS transport miles and billing details were included in the meeting packet and that the department continues to monitor language‑service use for patient contacts (the chief said the department’s vendor shows both Spanish and several other languages but that a detailed breakdown was not available in the meeting). Board members posed clarifying questions about vehicle status and interpretation of some packet figures. No formal board action was taken on the report.
