County to seek Federal Lands Access Program funds for road by landfill and Crane Meadows refuge

Tony Hennen, Morrison County Public Works director, asked the Board of Commissioners to approve a resolution supporting an application to the Federal Highway Administration’s Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP). Hennen said the county hopes to pursue funding for a road project that runs by the county landfill and the Crane Meadows National Wildlife Refuge and that the road is likely to be on the county construction program in the next three to five years.
Hennen described the grant as competitive and limited in size; he said the statewide FLAP opportunity totaled $5 million across Minnesota over a three-year period. The board voted to approve the resolution; Commissioner Blaine made the motion and Commissioner Casper seconded. The chair thanked Public Works for pursuing outside funding.
Hennen said if the grant application is unsuccessful, the project would be funded from the county’s normal capital funds.
