Development Services says new public‑projects review halved permitting timelines for city projects

Tara Villarey, Division Manager for Public Projects in the City of Austin Development Services Department, told the Bond Oversight Commission that a program launched in 2023 to coordinate permitting for publicly funded capital projects has reduced average review time for participating projects to about six months.
“Our mission … is to properly steward financial resources of capital and publicly funded projects by providing a timely and collaborative permitting review process,” Villarey said. She described a new workflow that brings reviewers from multiple city departments together with design teams at 30%, 60%, 90% and formal review stages, rather than waiting until a project is fully designed and submitted for permit review.
