Cannon County staff seek approval for secure SRO gun lockers; funding to come from safety funds

Mister Bill West (identified in the workshop as a district safety official) described the lockers as a model already used in another nearby county for more than a dozen years without reported problems. “...we're able to have them handle their tools,” West said, adding the lockers would prevent officers from leaving equipment in cars and reduce the risk of break-ins. He said the lockers would be wall-mounted and accessible only to authorized personnel.
Board members asked whether the lockers would be purchased from the district’s safety funds; West said the plan was to use safety program funds and estimated a per-unit price in the low hundreds of dollars. “It's really we're looking at 5 of them ... like, a $100,150 dollars,” he said (amount discussed as an estimate in the workshop).
No formal procurement or final approval was recorded at the workshop; staff said they would present a formal request at the Aug. 14 regular meeting for board consideration and any required signatures.
The discussion occurred in the same agenda block where the district outlined other safety-related actions, including SABE Act documentation and a forthcoming spending plan for recently allocated state safety funding.
