ZBA grants setback variances for 9 Woodley Lane shed

The Town of Grand Island Zoning Board of Appeals granted variances Aug. 7 to allow a 10-by-20 shed at 9 Woodley Lane to be placed closer to the lot lines than zoning typically permits.
Applicant Ashley Backlund of 9 Woodley Lane told the board she had installed a pad and was seeking permission to place the shed about five feet from the left side and five feet from the rear, rather than the builder’s cited 9 feet 8 inches. “We're getting a 10 by 20 shed put in, so we would like to just get a… it's in our back left corner of our lot. So we're looking to get it about 5 feet from the left side and 5 feet from the back,” Backlund said.
Board members discussed the previous shed at the property, which had been removed because it was unsafe, and noted the new shed was intended for storage and should not cause drainage problems. John Bridal moved to approve the requested rear and side-yard variances (a 5-foot variance); Michael Todaro seconded. The board voted unanimously to approve the variance. Board members advised Backlund to obtain the necessary building permit; Backlund said she had received mail indicating some approval but the board told her the code officer would confirm permitting paperwork.
The board’s motion and approval were recorded on the public record; members provided brief rationale that the shed is for storage and would not be detrimental to the neighborhood.
