Michelle Grimaldi, presenting the item, said the district previously partnered with the Lions Club and Vision Works through a $5,000 Blue Cross Blue Shield grant that provided two seasonal eye clinics and helped about 130 students last year. The proposed MOU with Complete Vision Care differs because the provider will operate on-site at school campuses, accept parental permission and insurance when available, and has a foundation that can assist families who lack insurance. Grimaldi said the district proposes starting with Curry, Scales and Thoo elementary schools, which previously generated the most referrals for vision assistance.
Board members praised the partnership and noted the potential to reach more students by hosting services at individual sites rather than central, seasonal clinics. The board approved the MOU by voice vote; no roll-call tally appears in the public transcript.
Next steps: The district will implement the three-school pilot, collect data on reach and outcomes, and report back to the board before expanding the program districtwide, according to staff comments during the meeting.
