County reviews draft strategic plan titled 'Sowing the Seeds of Our Future,' to be returned for adoption

County Administrator Andrew Lettson presented a draft strategic plan, titled Sowing the Seeds of Our Future, at the Aug. 25 Meeker County Board meeting and asked the board for feedback prior to formal adoption.

Lettson said the plan grew from department‑head workshops, individual interviews with commissioners and a staff survey. The document frames four priorities — financial stewardship; assets and amenities (including facilities and landfill management); quality economic growth (including housing and childcare); and organizational excellence — and pairs each priority with strategies, outcomes and specific goals. Examples of goals are evaluating county‑funded programs for efficacy, pursuing a long‑term solution for landfill and transfer station operations, supporting affordable‑housing priorities through the EDA, updating the comprehensive land‑use plan and creating a leadership and development program for county staff.

Lettson described implementation steps including internal education, public communications, periodic reporting to the board, and an annual formal review. Commissioners who spoke praised the clarity and format of the draft and asked that the county produce a one‑page summary and public‑facing materials for wider distribution. Several commissioners said they were comfortable with the draft as presented and asked administration to return it to the board for formal adoption at the next meeting.

The board did not take formal action on the draft at the Aug. 25 meeting and directed staff to bring the plan back for adoption after any minor refinements and completion of public‑facing materials.
