Scott Wilson asked the board to authorize payment for damage to his personal truck after debris from a Harrison County vehicle struck his truck on Interstate 10 near Blue Ridge on July 9. Wilson said he filed a police report and provided repair estimates and asked the county to reimburse him for the damage.
County leaders and counsel noted the county's apparent liability for an unsecured load and recommended allowing the county adjuster to inspect the vehicle and determine the appropriate payment. The board moved to authorize payment of the claim as adjusted by the county's insurance adjuster, with the county to pay the amount determined by the adjuster and generally to select the lower of comparable estimates when appropriate.
Wilson said he had obtained multiple estimates and preferred a middle estimate from a body shop he knew; the board agreed the adjuster (Walt Warren) should inspect the vehicle and finalize the amount. The motion to authorize payment was seconded and carried; staff said they would copy Warren on the claimant's contact information and proceed with adjustment and payment.
Board members also stressed that county employees must ensure loads are properly secured to prevent life-threatening hazards on roadways. The driver involved received a citation from Biloxi police, the board noted.
