The Pinellas County School Board unanimously approved the recommended 2026-27 instructional calendar on July 29 and also voted to remove two potential hurricane makeup days that had been placed during the 2025-26 Thanksgiving break.
Chief of Human Resources Mr. Vigu (presenting) told the board the 2026-27 calendar sets staff preplanning to begin Monday, Aug. 3, 2026, with students' first day on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026, and an ending date for students of Thursday, May 27, 2027 (Friday, May 28, 2027 for 10-month staff). The committee recommended six days of preplanning for 10-month teachers, a Thanksgiving break from Nov. 21-29, 2026, winter break Dec. 19, 2026-Jan. 3, 2027, spring break March 13-21, 2027, and first-semester exams scheduled before winter break.
On makeup days, Vigu explained the calendar committee had identified several potential hurricane makeup dates across the year but that families had expressed concern about uncertain holiday plans. "Therefore, our calendar committee is also recommending removal of potential hurricane days, makeup days for the Thanksgiving break of 25-26," he said, and staff said, if needed, the district would use an additional February non-student day as a makeup.
Why it matters: The calendar affects families' planning for travel and childcare. Board members said the calendar committee included parents, teachers, students and other stakeholders and that committee members solicited feedback from their constituencies.
Action taken: The board approved Item 8.2 (the 2026-27 calendar and modification to the 2025-26 instructional calendar) by a 7-0 vote.
What happens next: Staff will publish the approved calendar and communicate any final transportation or scheduling adjustments to schools and families ahead of the 2026-27 school year.
