Fire department reports full shift staffing after recruit academy; two leadership vacancies remain

The Wausau Fire Department reported to the Public Health and Safety Committee on July 21 that it graduated a third recruit academy this year and that shift staffing is now at full ranks, an outcome officials said will help reduce overtime.
Deputy Chief Pluss told the committee that two leadership positions remain open: one in the prevention bureau and the division chief of training. Department staff said filling those roles remains a hiring priority.
Officials attributed improved staffing in part to the department’s SAFER grant, which supported recruitment and allowed the department to conduct more in-house training. The committee placed the fire quarter 2 report on file.
