Surry County commissioners voted on July 21 to add a deputy county manager classification (grade 79) to the county’s classification plan and to authorize the county manager to advertise and appoint an interim until the position is filled.
The motion, offered during the meeting’s reconvened session, directed that the position be added “effective immediately” to the classification plan and that the county manager should advertise the role no later than Sept. 1, 2025. The motion also gave the county manager authority to name an interim appointee pending a permanent hire.
During the same sequence of votes the board also authorized appointment of an interim finance officer until the permanent finance officer position is filled.
Commissioners moved and seconded the action and the board adopted both measures. The meeting record shows the vote was taken by voice; the board announced the motion carried.
Ending: The board’s action adds a new senior management slot to the county classification plan and allows the county manager to place an interim in that role and appoint interim finance leadership while recruitment proceeds.
