Board adopts policy changes to add student voice in school naming and to clarify high‑school‑of‑choice rules

The Cincinnati Public Schools board on Oct. 6 adopted two policy changes recommended by its Policy Committee: (a) adding student voice to the criteria used when the district considers naming or renaming school facilities (policy 7250) and (b) updating language that governs inter‑district enrollment and the district’s high‑schools‑of‑choice rules to align policy with current portfolio practice.
Policy Committee Chair Board Member Lindy and members of the committee described the changes as largely clarifying and intended to update policy to match current practice. Lindy said the naming policy adds students to the list of stakeholders whose recommendations are considered. Vice President Bolton and others said the student voice addition would also encourage historical research projects and give students a role in bicentennial commemorations.
The committee also recommended removing a requirement for a mandated computerized lottery for high schools of choice and otherwise modernizing the enrollment policy language to better reflect corridor planning (east, central, west) and current program placement. Committee members said the change should be monitored to ensure it does not reduce equitable access to high‑school programs; the board directed staff to check outcomes in coming months.
Outcome: The board adopted the Policy Committee recommendations in a single motion and unanimous roll call (7–0).
