A citizen request to name a county bridge for Ray Donald Flenny was presented to the Wilson County Road Commission on Oct. 2; commissioners asked staff to verify locations and jurisdiction and deferred a final decision until a future meeting.
Mister Denton presented a packet of records on behalf of the family that included discharge papers, a death certificate, military awards and a short biography. Denton said the family suggested several site options, including a Spring Creek bridge on Sparta Pike between Lindsay and Greenwood and a bridge between Greenwood and the Bethel Church of Christ, and that the family would also be open to a bridge inside the city where the honoree had lived.
Commissioners discussed jurisdictional limitations: county staff said bridges located on state routes or inside municipal boundaries may require state or city approval rather than only county action. Commissioners asked staff to check county naming guidelines, confirm whether candidate bridges already carry a dedication or plaque, and reach out to the city mayor where appropriate. Denton said he would try to coordinate with supporting family members and return documentation for staff use.
Next steps Staff will confirm whether each suggested bridge falls under county, state or municipal jurisdiction and check any existing dedications. Commissioners asked staff to prepare a recommendation and bring the request back at the next monthly meeting for possible approval.
