Board appoints representative to Tonkin Monument committee; discusses committee size and use of outside designs

The Fremont County School District #25 Board of Trustees appointed Trustee Terry as the board’s representative to a community committee to work on the Tonkin Monument and discussed the committee’s membership and authority.

Trustees reviewed community interest in serving on the committee and debated appropriate committee size and voting status. Board members agreed that the committee should be an odd number with voting representation from the board; Terry volunteered and the trustees confirmed him as the district’s representative. Trustees discussed whether the superintendent or other board members should serve ex officio; the board clarified the superintendent would not be a voting member in the language they reviewed.

The board reiterated that materials created by designer John Cox — which several trustees had received for review — are not district-owned and are not public records the district purchased. Chair and staff said those materials should not be shared from district files; if the new committee wishes to consult with Cox, any contact or use of his designs would be a committee decision and separate arrangement.
