Mayor's scholarship application opens Nov. 1; volunteers sought for Oct. 11 banquet

Hayden said the scholarship is administered through the Collaboratory, which collects and vets applications for multiple scholarships. "An application with them actually accomplishes application for several scholarships," she said. Hayden said the Collaboratory forwards a vetted set of roughly 20 to 30 applicants to the Mayor's Scholarship committee for local review.
Nut Graf: The Mayor's Scholarship Fund typically awards about 10 recurring $1,000-per-year scholarships to graduating seniors, Hayden said. Awards are paid directly to the student's college; recipients must stay in contact with the Collaboratory for recurring disbursements and annual reporting.
Hayden described eligibility and selection details she said are important for Cape Coral applicants: applicants must be Cape Coral residents, and the Collaboratory requires that applicants submit a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as part of their packet. Hayden said that if the FAFSA is not on file or the required Cape Coral question is not completed, the Collaboratory may not pass the application into the local review pool.
On volunteer opportunities, Hayden invited youth council members to staff check-in and checkout tables at the Mayor's Scholarship Ball on Oct. 11 and to assist with the organization's spring golf tournament. "We typically are raising between $50,000 and $70,000 a year" through the two events and sponsorships, she said, and added that the number of four-year scholarships awarded depends on annual fundraising.
Hayden said the scholarship program also supports students attending technical schools and local workforce programs, and that scholarship recipients have included past youth council members.
Ending: Hayden encouraged seniors to watch for the Collaboratory application portal and to ask for FAFSA help if needed. She said the Collaboratory and some high schools offer FAFSA assistance sessions. "If you have filed and have something that says it's been submitted, you can upload that with your application to the Collaboratory," she said.
