St. Clair County commission adopts 10-year solid waste management plan after public hearing

The St. Clair County Commission voted to adopt a 10-year solid waste management plan after holding a republished public hearing.

County planning staff said the plan summarizes and estimates generation, collection, disposal and recycling for the county and all municipalities and that municipalities had input. Staff said the plan had been reviewed at the state level and that the commission republished notice beginning June 26 with six publication dates, the last on July 31, to allow additional public comment after an earlier publication interval of less than 30 days.

The commission held the public hearing at the meeting and then took a motion to adopt the plan. The motion was approved by voice vote.

The plan also addresses how the county handles household solid-waste collection in unincorporated areas, where collection is provided under private contract rather than directly by the county; staff said one previous contractor declined to renew citing fuel and cost pressures, and the plan includes guidance for handling that contract situation.

Commissioners did not request additional changes during the meeting; the county will proceed with the adopted plan as described by staff.
