Council awards engineering contract for sidewalk design along Frankfort Road/Highway 460

The Georgetown City Council approved a municipal order on Aug. 25 to award a contract to Bell Engineering to design sidewalk improvements along U.S. 460/Main Street from the water filtration plant west to Elizabeth Street.
City Engineer Eddie explained the Phase 2 scope: the work begins at Rose Springs (corner near the water plant) and runs west past Tucker Funeral Home and Kentucky Avenue, ending at Elizabeth Street. Eddie said the terrain is steep in places and will likely require retaining walls and more involved design work than flatter stretches. “This will kick off the design effort, and we'll ask you to approve the contract with Bell Engineering to start that work,” Eddie said.
Councilmember Britt moved the municipal order; the motion was seconded by Leslie Mitchell and approved by voice vote. Eddie said the project follows Phase 1 (sidewalks over the bridge and viaduct) and uses TAP grant funding; the state transportation cabinet will review design plans because they are the grantor and will be involved throughout design review. Councilmembers asked staff to confirm whether other shoulder or roadway improvements could be included in the design review with the cabinet.
Eddie said he would ask the cabinet whether additional roadway work should be considered in the engineering scope. The council approved the Bell Engineering contract to begin design work on the sidewalk project so the city can proceed to grant compliance and later construction phases.
