Curtis, a public works staff member, updated the Board of County Commissioners at the Aug. 25 workshop on staffing, road maintenance and equipment repairs.
Curtis said the department is approximately 38.2% through its budget year with about 21.8% remaining and reported hiring three equipment operators after successful interviews. He said crews graded four service roads in the Mancos and Dolores areas and completed substantial right‑of‑way mulching that county residents complimented.
On equipment, Curtis said the county’s crusher is undergoing welding and repairs in the Cortez yard and that the county currently has surplus gravel and chip materials, so large‑scale crushing is being postponed. "The crusher is probably the second best asset we have, only second to really the crew," Curtis said, explaining the crusher will be used again when stockpiles decline.
Curtis said vehicle maintenance spending is about 53% expended with 46% remaining, and that chip‑seal and road projects are scheduled to begin in September.
Ending: Curtis asked commissioners to raise any questions and said staff will continue follow up on a separate property contract matter involving other county staff.
