Columbus County schedules public hearing on proposed half‑acre minimum for sewered lots

Columbus County commissioners voted to establish a public hearing on Monday, Sept. 15, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. to consider a text amendment to the countymajor subdivision ordinance that would raise the minimum lot size for properties served by public sewer from 15,000 square feet to 21,780 square feet.
Planning Director Kelsey Hammond told commissioners the change would "take the minimum lot size from 15,000 square feet to 21,780 square feet. So it would make it a true half acre, and that would be for a major subdivision ordinance." Hammond said the designation applies where public water and public sewer are available.
"This is where you have the public water and the public sewer available. So if you have private well, if you have a septic tank, you have those private utilities and that's a true full acre. This here would increase the public water and the public sewer lots to and a half acre," Hammond said.
A commissioner asked for clarification whether the proposal applied only where sewer was available; Hammond replied that the county's other lot-size categories apply to properties served by private wells and septic systems and remain at one acre.
Commissioner Bullard moved to establish the public hearing; Commissioner Floyd seconded. The motion carried following an affirmative voice vote.
The hearing will consider the proposed text amendment to the major subdivision ordinance; the board did not take final action on the ordinance itself at the meeting.
