Board adds 17 district court positions under interlocal agreement with Olympia; city covers costs

Thurston County commissioners on Aug. 19 approved a resolution to add 17 full-time-equivalent (FTE) positions to District Court to provide court services under an interlocal agreement (ILA) with the City of Olympia.
Maria Pontay, Thurston County human resources director, told the board the positions are needed so the county can provide court services for City of Olympia criminal cases and infractions requiring hearings, as well as progressive alternatives and supervised probation. Pontay said the cost of the added positions will be fully covered by the City of Olympia under the ILA.
The requested staffing additions include: one district court commissioner; two court support managers; one calendar coordinator; one Court Assistant I; three Court Assistant IIs; five adult probation counselor IIs; two adult probation clerks; one mental health and veterans care coordinator; and one administrative assistant for general administrative support.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions; district court executive officer Frankie Peters was not present but staff and the county manager answered questions. A motion to approve the resolution passed unanimously among commissioners present.
County staff said the hiring process will proceed and is contingent on the ILA terms and the city’s funding commitments; no county net operating cost was shown at the meeting because the positions are paid by Olympia under the agreement.
