Town of Lakeville voters at a special town meeting on May 17, 2018, voted unanimously to transfer funds from available reserves to cover unanticipated fiscal-year 2018 costs across several general-fund accounts.
Town Administrator Rita Goblet told voters the article was an “annual housekeeping article” used to close out the previous year’s budget and cover deficit areas. She said the largest transfers were for snow-and-ice salaries and expenses, and that the town sets aside $200,000 in its reserve fund annually in anticipation of those costs. Goblet said out-of-district tuitions for Bristol Aggie amounted to about $20,000 this year and legal fees were roughly $31,000 over budget.
The finance committee recommended approval. After no speakers requested to comment, the moderator called for a voice-and-card vote and declared the article unanimously approved.
The transfers were presented as line-item adjustments drawn from wage accounts where positions were vacant or staff had departed and the positions were not filled during the year. No dollar-by-dollar transfer schedule beyond the examples described in the warrant summary was read aloud at the meeting; the warrant refers voters to a transfer list on page 3 of the warrant.
The action resolves budget shortfalls for fiscal year 2018 by moving available funds into the affected general-fund accounts; the town will reflect the transfers in its year-end closing documents.
