Barry County meeting roundup: large prepaid invoices, claims and personnel actions approved

The board also approved a conditional commissioner mileage reimbursement of $666.40. Commissioners recorded aye votes during roll calls; absent members were noted in each tally.
Personnel: The board conducted a short ceremonial oath and welcomed new deputy sheriff Derek Dawkins, who was sworn to support the constitutions of the United States and Michigan and to faithfully perform the duties of deputy sheriff in Barry County.
County administration updates: The county administrator told commissioners the proposed budget was expected to be finalized within days and said the county would receive additional opioid-settlement funds over the next several years, including funds from the Purdue/Sackler settlement. The administrator also said facilities and grounds work had been completed and described plans to remove an unused portico at a courthouse entrance.
Other items and briefings: Planning staff told commissioners a model short-term rental ordinance is being circulated for townships to consider; the county does not plan to adopt a countywide rule but will provide education. Commissioners discussed ambulance-service changes: Mercy Ambulance plans to leave parts of Barry County, and Life Ambulance (based in the Grand Rapids area) agreed to take over contracted areas where townships had provided subsidy commitments; several townships and the city are studying financial arrangements and feasibility.
