Commissioners approve zoning change in Johnstown Township for church expansion at S. M-37 Highway

The Barry County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 12 adopted Resolution 25-21 to rezone a property at 14510 S. M-37 Highway in Section 27 of Johnstown Township from agricultural to RR (rural residential).
Jeff Keesler of the county planning and zoning office told the board the planning commission approved the request at its July 28 meeting and recommended the board adopt the rezoning. "We did approve this special land use at the planning commission on July 28," Keesler said. "The purpose of this is to address a request to build a larger church on the property, which is permitted in RR but not in agricultural zoning."
Keesler said the parcel borders the Spring Creek Solar Farm and noted the site is relatively isolated, which reduced concerns about spot zoning. Board members asked whether any neighbors had objected; Keesler said none had registered opposition in the record and that the applicants' property abuts the solar farm, providing a buffer.
The board approved the rezoning by roll call. Present commissioners recorded aye votes; two commissioners were absent. The change authorizes rural residential uses on the parcel consistent with the county's zoning map and the planning commission's recommendation.
The approval implements the planning commission's earlier decision and clears the way for the applicant to seek building and land-use permits required for the church expansion.
