Custer County commissioners voted Wednesday to include $176,455.76 as the county’s portion of the Eleventh Judicial District attorney budget.
The vote formalizes the county’s portion of a multi-county budget that covers Chaffee, Custer, Fremont and Park counties. County Chairman Bill Kanda presented the totals during the meeting and said the allocation is based on population. "Our total is gonna be $176,455.76," Kanda said when summarizing the district proposal.
Why it matters: the DA budget is pooled among four counties; Fremont’s larger population drives a larger share for that jurisdiction. Commissioners noted Custer County’s bill is lower than other counties because of the population formula but acknowledged the county had underpaid in prior years and the amount partly represents catching up to the correct population-based share.
During discussion, the new district attorney, Jeff Lindsay, was mentioned as having pledged transparency and regular visits to the counties. The board voted to include the figure in Custer County’s budget deliberations. The motion to accept the Eleventh Judicial District attorney budget as the county’s portion passed with commissioners recorded as voting in the affirmative.
The commissioners said the DA share will be considered formally in the county’s upcoming budget hearings and incorporated into the county’s budget documents.
