Two Hoke County school libraries win Laura Bush Foundation grants to expand collections for EC and ELL students

Two Hoke County school libraries have received competitive grants from the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries, district staff announced at the Aug. 12 board meeting.
Karen Nichols, Hoke County Schools'coordinator of digital teaching, learning and library media services, told the board that for the first time in the district's history two libraries were awarded Laura Bush Foundation grants. Each award is $5,000. One grant will purchase materials to support exceptional children and self-contained classrooms and English-language learners at the high school (including high-interest picture books, accessible chapter books and culturally diverse titles). The other grant will expand Spanish-language and bilingual titles, culturally rich books and audiobooks at a school where staff reported only about 2% of the collection matched a student population that is roughly 27% Hispanic.
Nichols said the grants are intended to expand representation and access to books so more students "see themselves" in library collections. The district will allocate the funds to the named schools and librarians to purchase the materials described in their applications.
The board received the report and celebrated the awards; no board action was required.
