District construction and facilities staff updated the Hoke County Board of Education on the new Hoke County High School construction progress at the Aug. 12 meeting, describing exterior and interior milestones, the project schedule, and current budget status.
The project team said the roof is roughly 90% complete and crews are installing exterior metal panels, storefronts and glass clerestory framing. Interior work shown in progress includes classroom partitioning, drywall installation, HVAC and mechanical systems and acoustic insulation. The site work described includes drop-off loop paving, storm drainage tie-ins and utility work for campus power and communications.
Schedule and occupancy: district and contractor representatives told the board the project remains on the current schedule. The team outlined a two-phase completion with a period of occupancy between phases; the projected substantial completion window is March'April 2026 to allow time for furniture installation and a planned classroom shuffle next summer so the building is fully occupied for the 2026 school year.
Budget and contingencies: presenters reported a project budget of roughly $78,400,000. They said the general contractor had been paid about 56.9% to date (the presenter corrected a prior spreadsheet error), with combined contingencies across contractor, design and owner categories totaling approximately $2.4 million remaining; about $930,000—35,000 of potential costs (retentions and site-close items) were still to be resolved. The presentation noted an available commissioning contract line of about $133,000 that had not yet been allocated. Presenters described overall contingencies as sufficient but said some contingency disbursements remain under review.
Next steps and communication: staff told the board the project team will return with any recommended allocations as remaining costs become firm. The district also plans coordination for a large summer move and teacher/classroom reassignments to prepare for occupancy.
The board took no action other than to receive the presentation.
