Representatives of the Solvang Senior Center updated the City Council on Aug. 11 about membership growth, new programs and progress on a capital campaign for a new building.
A Senior Center representative told the council the center has continued to grow its membership despite operating out of temporary facilities; volunteers and instructors have stepped forward and staff plan to expand activities such as yoga, nutrition programming taught by a local chef, journaling and mindfulness classes, a walking class for slower walkers and ‘‘death-cafe’’ conversations on end-of-life planning. The representative invited council and the public to a fundraiser planned for October and said a new center website and time-lapse construction footage are available online.
Tom Olmstead of the Solvang Senior Center Capital Campaign Committee reported that the new building framing is well under way, contractors are installing HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, and a critical water-line crossing beneath Maple Avenue was installed earlier than expected. Olmstead gave a forecasted completion date of May 19, 2026 and said weekly contractor meetings are scheduled.
Council members thanked the center for its programs and said they welcome outreach about volunteer needs and continued coordination with city staff on facilities and transportation for senior activities. No formal council action was required; the presentation was informational.
