The Austin Historic Landmark Commission voted unanimously Aug. 6 to recommend historic combining zoning (SF‑3‑H) for the residence at 1701 San Gabriel Street in the Judges Hill neighborhood.
Staff told the commission the 1927 house was designed in a Colonial Georgian idiom and detailed its architectural hallmarks — gable roof, three front dormers, classical front porch and brick exterior — and its associations with Judge Ireland Graves and later resident Robert Henderson Doherty III. The staff recommended designation on the basis of architecture and historical associations.
Sean Reynolds, one of the architects on the project, said the rehabilitation team “took as much care as possible to preserve and restore all the features of this home” and that original openings were largely retained and materials reclaimed where practical. Commissioners emphasized the extent of the restoration as supporting evidence for designation.
Commissioner Kevin Cook moved approval, and Commissioner Carl LaRoche seconded. Cook said, “I think the application speaks for itself. It's a great structure,” and commissioners raised their hands in a unanimous vote to approve the application.
Because the property will proceed through the planning commission and Austin City Council for final zoning action, future exterior work on the property will be subject to historic‑landmark review if the council confirms the designation. The commission congratulated the project team for completing the rehabilitation prior to seeking designation.
Action: Motion to approve historic combining zoning (SF‑3‑H) for 1701 San Gabriel Street based on architecture and historical associations; motion carried unanimously.
