Township approves unplanned sewer lining after DTE boring damage; staff to seek reimbursement

The Macomb Township Board of Trustees on July 23 approved a $60,825 contract with Duke’s Root Control Inc. for sanitary sewer sectional lining after TV inspections uncovered multiple locations where bore rods — installed for DTE grounding boxes — damaged the township’s sewer mains.
Mr. Johnson, a DPW staff member, said crews found approximately 15 locations where DTE’s boring had penetrated sewer mains during cleaning and TV inspection work; he added that one additional location was identified in the last week and might be added to the contract. “We have been in contact with DTE and I am looking to get 100% reimbursement for this,” he said, while noting the reimbursement process may take time.
Trustees discussed the nature of the rods and their relative size compared to the sewer piping and asked whether the township coordinates with MISS DIG before utility work; Mr. Johnson and staff said they have been working with DTE to keep equipment out of sewer easements and are improving processes to prevent recurrence. The board approved the lining contract unanimously.
