Rebecca Lee, a member of Northbrook’s Sustainability Commission, briefed the Village Board on recent improvements in residential geothermal HVAC systems and incentives that have made the technology more practical for homeowners.
Lee said modern units are smaller, quieter, more efficient and easier to integrate with smart controls; loop-field requirements have declined from the older 300‑foot loops to multiple shorter loops in some installs, which she said lowers disruption to yards and tree cover. She noted financial incentives and faster payback times compared with earlier installations, although she cautioned that payback depends on incentives and upfront cost.
President Catherine Ciesla told Lee the board has evaluated geothermal and "given a green light" to use geothermal in the village’s new fire station and the new public works garage. The meeting record did not show a formal vote on that matter during the session.
Why it matters: geothermal systems can reduce building energy demand and strain on the electric grid. Lee recommended continued exploration of the technology for new and retrofit projects; trustees thanked her and noted local geothermal contractors are available in Northbrook and nearby communities.
