CHSD 99 board approves $633,000 Musco stadium lighting upgrades for Downers Grove South and North

The Community High School District 99 Board of Education on a unanimous vote approved Musco Sports Lighting quotes for the district's Downers Grove South and Downers Grove North stadiums, authorizing administration to sign related contracts for a combined cost of $633,000.
District staff told the board the project will be funded using remaining Fund 90 energy-conservation dollars and a $300,000 Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) grant obtained with assistance from state Senator Rachel Ventura. “We confirm that that total project cost that that we're bringing to you tonight, is to be paid for using those Fund 90 funds as well as the DCEO grant funds,” Travis, the district facilities presenter, said during the meeting.
Travis said the board selected Musco after a competitive review and site visits. The two quotes are $315,000 for Downers Grove South (including a 10‑year materials and on-site labor warranty for concrete poles) and $318,000 for Downers Grove North (including a 25‑year warranty for metal poles). Staff also described energy and operational benefits: LED fixtures that are “instant on, instant off,” remote on/off programming, dimming, reduced light spill into neighborhoods and optional color and show lighting for game‑day effects.
Travis said the district anticipates installation within 8 to 10 weeks after contract signing and that the new system will remove the need for rental supervisors to manually switch lights on and off for outside events. He also pointed to estimated energy savings: “Over the next 5 years, there's an estimated just over $24,000 in savings, and that is between both stadiums,” he said.
Board members asked about warranties, expected useful life and opportunities for student involvement in production or scoreboard integration. Travis said LED lifespan is commonly near 25 years but clarified the shorter warranty on the South quote reflects the existing concrete poles’ limitations. He said there is potential for increased student roles in game production as the district grows technical capacity.
The motion to approve the quotes was moved by Ken Dawson and seconded by Chris Espinosa. Julie called the roll and the motion carried with the board voting aye: Ken Dawson; Chris Espinosa; April Feynon; Michael Riske; Katie Courtney; and Don Renner.
District administration said work will proceed once contracts are executed and that the installations should be completed before spring sports season.
