Salem council authorizes ODNR grant application to repair Centennial Pool; mayor says sidewalk grant also pending

Salem City Council on Oct. 21 authorized the parks director to submit an application to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Land and Water Conservation Fund to help pay for repairs to the Centennial Pool.
Councilman Zellers moved to suspend rules and introduce the resolution the same evening; council later adopted the resolution with the emergency clause by unanimous roll-call vote. The resolution authorizes the parks director to seek financial assistance through the ODNR fund.
Mayor Dickey told council the pool repairs are “a very expensive undertaking” and that the grant would help defray that cost. The mayor also told council the city has a sidewalk grant application under consideration to evaluate and repair city sidewalks; she said the sidewalk project would likely be phased and that if additional funding is not secured the city would need to provide the other half of the cost, which she said is $438,000.
Council recorded unanimous votes for the ODNR application resolution. No funding commitments beyond the application were finalized at the meeting; the mayor said the city is pursuing other grants to cover remaining costs before proceeding with further phases of downtown sidewalk work.
The council did not record public comment opposing the pool or sidewalk grant applications at this meeting.
