Commissioners adopt amended business license fee schedule after tier consolidation

Dawson County commissioners voted to adopt an amended fee schedule on Sept. 4, combining lower revenue tiers and raising fees for larger businesses.
County staff presented a revised schedule based on comparisons with other North Georgia communities. Key changes presented: combine the $1–$99,999 and $100,000–$249,999 tiers into a single $1–$249,999 tier with a $200 fee; combine prior mid tiers so that $250,000–$999,999 carries a $600 fee; create a $1,000,000–$2,499,999 tier at $1,000; and set a $2,500,000-and-above tier at $2,000. The packet noted the previous top tier (above $1,000,000) had been $800.
The board adopted the ordinance and a companion resolution in a single motion. Commissioner Bruce moved to adopt the ordinance and resolution; Commissioner Turcotte seconded. The motion passed by roll call.
A county staff member said the proposed tiers reflect input and comparisons from neighboring jurisdictions and are intended to balance revenue and business competitiveness. One commissioner thanked staff for working through the tiers and said the changes made the schedule ‘‘more well rounded.’’
The ordinance and resolution take effect according to the county’s adoption procedures; staff did not state an effective-on date at the Sept. 4 meeting.
