Willis ISD reports widespread test-score gains; high school rises to B rating

Willis ISD staff presented 2025 STAR assessment and TEA accountability data at the Aug. 20 board meeting, reporting districtwide gains across elementary campuses and improvement at the high school level.
Director Tracy Jackson (presentation lead) walked trustees through campus-by-campus comparisons between 2024 and 2025 and highlighted several double-digit gains in elementary reading, math and science. Staff said science at multiple elementary campuses saw particularly large improvements and pointed to a district 90/60/30 standard used to measure progress in target grades.
At the high school level, staff reported an increase in accountability points: Willis High School’s overall district score rose from 69 (a D) in 2023 to 84 (a B) in 2025 — a 16-point increase. District staff noted the high school’s gains and cited improvements in algebra and biology as contributors. Several campuses earned state distinctions: Turner and Lagway (the transcript uses 'Lagway'/'Lag Way' stylings) received multiple distinctions for comparative academic growth and postsecondary readiness; other campuses earned distinctions in reading and closing gaps for 2024 and 2025.
Trustees and staff credited consistent leadership and campus-level work for the rise in scores. Board President (Mister Williams) praised principals and staff and said progress reflected planning and community engagement. Staff said distinctions and ratings data will be used to guide resource allocation and next-step interventions.
The board recognized principals and staff on the improvements and approved routine consent and action items following the presentation. District staff said they will continue reporting progress and use the data to monitor goal progress measures adopted earlier in the meeting.
