Overland Park police outline new training facility, hires and body-camera plan

The Overland Park Public Safety Committee received renderings and a timeline for a new police training facility and heard staffing and technology updates from department leaders.
Chief Joe (presenter identified in meeting) showed exterior and interior renderings of the proposed training building, explaining its location near the Sanders Justice Center and noting features that include a fitness room, a large classroom with stadium seating, a defensive-tactics room with padded flooring, a 50-yard range with a decontamination area and washer/dryer for range uniforms, and offices for professional standards and training staff. He said the design team has shared 50% construction documents and that the Planning Commission unanimously approved the preliminary development plan. “We hope to have the finalized plans and all approvals by the end of the year with construction beginning in 2026,” he said.
Separately, department updates reported progress on hiring: the police chief said the department hired three officers and two part-time criminal investigators since the last meeting; earlier the fire department reported seven conditional job offers for firefighters due to begin Aug. 25. The police presentation also flagged a pending purchase agreement with Axon for body-worn cameras and related technologies; staff said the item will return to the committee when final terms are ready for discussion.
The committee discussed how the training facility is designed to meet both current and future needs and thanked staff for the update. No formal committee action was taken on the facility at the meeting; staff indicated further design approvals and procurement steps will follow the planning and final-document process.
The presentation also noted ongoing regional training partnerships, a captain attending the FBI National Academy, and upcoming press releases on a community partnership (Shadow Buddies) that will supply child-focused safety items bearing the Overland Park Police Department badge.
The department said it will return to the committee with procurement details on the Axon agreement and additional schedule updates for the training facility.
