Recreation and Park Department staff told the commission on August 23 that the department ran a large summer program in 2025: 51 day camps over 10 weeks at 31 sites, producing 9,469 enrollments and serving roughly 5,000 individual children across multiple sessions. The department also delivered 268 learn‑to‑swim classes and reported that approximately 1,700 children participated in swim instruction this season.
Assistant Superintendent Anne Marie Donnelly said the department awarded nearly $1,200,000 in camp scholarships to approximately 1,200 children; the majority (about 935) received full scholarships based on income eligibility. Donnelly said weekly parent surveys returned overwhelmingly positive feedback on programming, staff engagement and logistics, and highlighted specific camps including a girls’ sports camp in the Mission, Camp Tsukahika at Lake Merced for outdoor activities, and neighborhood programs that included meditation and journaling components.
Commissioners and staff praised long‑serving employees and the broad partnership across maintenance, gardeners and communications staff that supported the camps. Several commissioners described on‑site visits to multiple camp locations and commended staff for reaching children citywide. No formal action was required; staff presented the summary as a program report.
