CPRC approves training request, minutes and excused absences; city attorney reports unanimous support for eight closed-session items

The National City Community and Police Relations Commission voted on multiple procedural items at its Aug. 21 meeting and heard a closed-session report from the city attorney.

Commissioners voted to request city-manager approval to send Commissioner Gomez to the National Association for Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement (NACOLE) annual conference planned for October 2025 in Minneapolis. The clerk reported an estimated cost of about $2,300 for attendance; commissioners noted that final approval must come through the city manager’s office.

The commission also approved minutes from its May 15 meeting (with a proposed correction to note that Chair Orth was recorded as calling the meeting to order) and granted excused absences for Vice Chair Leslie and Police Member McClure for the May 15 meeting. All motions recorded at the meeting were carried by unanimous vote.

City Attorney Schultz reported out of closed session, saying, “All 8 items received a vote of support, by unanimous vote of the commissioners in attendance.” The commission did not disclose the substance of the eight closed-session items during the public meeting.

During commissioner reports, members discussed community engagement. Vice Chair Leslie described a June ride-along with the police department and praised officers for their “professionalism and compassion” when the department assisted her family in making a death notification. Commissioner Gomez and others proposed more public outreach at events such as National Night Out to raise awareness of the commission’s role and encourage community participation.

The commission adjourned and scheduled its next regular meeting for Nov. 20, 2025, at 6 p.m.
