Pastor asks council to pursue speed reduction near Nicksville Baptist Church after pedestrian fatality

Pastor Allen Hurst of Nicksville Baptist Church asked the Hampton County Council on Aug. 18 to consider lowering the speed limit on 2 Sister Ferry Road near his church, citing a pedestrian fatality and near-misses involving children.
Hurst said the front of the church is about 15 feet from the road and recounted that on Jan. 27 his brother-in-law, Jerry McGiddy, who had Down syndrome, was struck and killed while crossing that road. He asked whether the council could request a reduction from the current 55 mph limit to 45 mph, noting similar reductions in nearby locations.
Councilman James replied that speed-limit changes would likely be a Department of Transportation issue but said he would initiate an inquiry on the pastor’s behalf.
No formal action was taken beyond the request to seek DOT review; the item was entered into the public comment record and council staff were asked to follow up.
