Larimer County refines addressing and road-naming rules to reduce emergency-response errors

Larimer County commissioners reviewed a rewritten Addressing and Road Naming Resolution at an Aug. 11 work session aimed at clarifying how the county assigns and changes site addresses and road names and at reducing public-safety risks caused by inconsistent addressing.

The new draft, staff said, reorganizes and shortens the 2006 resolution into 14 sections, adds definitions intended to reduce ambiguity, formalizes a request-to-deviate and appeal process, and places public-safety coordination at the center of decisions over address and road-name changes.

County information-technology staff said the older resolution was written for a one-time rural addressing project and created ambiguity during ongoing maintenance. "The previous resolution was really meant to, accompany a real rural addressing project, and this new resolution is tailored more to the ongoing maintenance," Greg Turnbull, director of innovation and insights, said. Staff and the county attorney reviewed wording throughout to remove redundancy and make requirements easier to follow.
