ODOT reports bridge condition ranking climbs to No. 4, Heartland Flyer funding secured for another year

Director Gatz delivered the department's director's report, highlighting statewide bridge inspection outcomes, passenger rail funding and upcoming major projects.
Gatz said ODOT now ranks fourth in the nation for its on-highway bridge inventory, the highest ranking the agency has achieved. He said roughly 35 bridges are characterized as structurally deficient and about 1,000 bridges are "at risk" with conditional elements; the structurally deficient bridges are included in the 8-year construction work plan for repair.
On passenger rail, Gatz reported that the North Central Texas Council of Governments voted to provide $3.5 million in funding to keep the Heartland Flyer operating for another year; he said the department is waiting for follow-up decisions from TxDOT and Amtrak and anticipated the route would operate another year but cautioned the funding cycle in Texas is biennial and the issue could recur.
Gatz also announced a first-time statewide snowplow-naming contest for K'12 students: districts will accept submissions Aug. 11 Sept. 15 with winners announced Oct. 10 and names applied to three plows per district.
He previewed large upcoming projects including an Interstate 40 interchange reconstruction in Clinton (estimated $76 million, includes four at-risk bridges), I-35 widening near Thackerville (estimated $16 million) and a $22 million widening of US-270B (Kickapoo Street) through Shawnee. Gatz warned that ODOT is rebalancing its 8-year construction work plan because rapid cost escalation has made advancing projects more difficult; he noted cost escalation is moderating but budget pressures remain.
Gatz closed with a safety message ahead of the school year urging seat-belt use and caution in school zones and construction areas. Commissioners thanked staff and noted pride in the bridge program's improvements.
